INDONESIAKININEWS.COM - In order to commemorate 100 years of the great Indonesian writer and poet Sitor Situmorang, Perpustakaan Jakarta (the Jakarta Library) and Pusat Dokumentasi Sastra HB Jassin collaborated with the Sitor Situmorang Foundation is organizing the 100-year Archive Exhibition of Sitor Situmorang: Wajah Tak Bernama.

This activity will take place from October 2, 2024 to November 2, 2024, located inside the Taman Ismail Marzuki, Jl. Cikini Raya 73, Jakarta.

Sitor Situmorang was born in Harian Boho, Samosir, North Sumatra. He was born with the name Raja Usu Situmorang.

Sitor is the fifth child of Ompu Babiat, a traditional leader from the Situmorang clan. That background made him grow up in a strong ancestral tradition.

However, the strict ancestral tradition that lived within him did not stop his desire to learn about various things outside his homeland.

His curiosity took him to various parts of the world.

It is said that he has visited Singapore, Amsterdam, Spain, London, China, Russia, Islamabad, Pakistan and various other areas. His return to his hometown after thirteen years of wandering, in the book Kegelisahan Dunia Sitor Situmorang (2023, Tempo) is called: The Lost Child has Returned.

The Lost Child depicts a child who returns to his hometown after living in Europe, but his soul and mind remain in that foreign place.

This condition reflects a theme that is often raised in Sitor's works, namely feelings of loss and incompatibility between two different worlds.

Now, the Lost Child is no longer trapped in the different worlds that once filled his soul.

He has become one with the world itself, leaving an intellectual legacy that connects all the differences of the world he depicts.

His figure is increasingly eternal and becomes the key to opening the doors of knowledge for the next generation.

This year, on October 2, 2024, if he is still alive Sitor Situmorang will be 100 years.

An age that is worthy of being celebrated as a form of gratitude for his immortality in the intellectual world.

During his life, he has produced many works in the form of poetry, short stories, drama scripts, film scripts, translations, essays, paintings and various other works.

He is one of the important poets on the map of Indonesian literature.

His name fills the spaces of journalism, literature, education and art. Sitor died on December 21st, 2014 in Apeldoorn, Holland.

Sitor is also a very influential figure in other arts. Sitor's powerful existence in the world of classical music is through Ananda Sukarlan.

This most prominent Indonesian classical music composer has set many of his poems to music, namely art songs (in Indonesian it is "Tembang Puitik" or poetic songs, which indicates songs using text by existing poems).

Ananda Sukarlan's art songs become iconic to Indonesia, comparable to those of Franz Schubert, Ned Rorem and other composers of this genre.

"In fact I didn't make music out of Sitor Situmorang's poems. His poems are so powerful that music just shines naturally from those poems", explain the prominent composer and pianist who is one of the prominent classical music composers  of Indonesia.

He has set about a dozen of Sitor's poems, among others his long poem "La Ronde", as well as "Surat Kertas Hijau" (Green paper letter) and "Malam Kebumen" (Kebumen Night).
